History is a big part of Phil Hardberger Park. The land that now makes up the park was once Max and Minnie Voelcker’s dairy farm. The Conservancy has worked with many organizations to preserve the Voelcker Homestead as a place for learning about San Antonio's agrarian heritage.
The dairy barn and antique windmill have been restored. The rehabilitation of the original 1800's Texas Stone House, funded by the Conservancy, was finished in the fall of 2014. The final stage of the homestead restoration will include the rehabilitation of the 1930's farmhouse.
The Historic Homestead is only open to the public during special events, such as the annual Dairy Days in the fall, the Children’s Vegetable Garden classes, and third Saturday programs at the Butterfly Learning Center.
