Children’s Vegetable Garden
The PHP Children’s Vegetable Garden is in the park’s Historic Homestead. It is a great place for children to get their hands dirty as they learn every aspect of gardening, from planting to harvesting.
With the help of volunteers from the Bexar County Master Gardeners, the students begin the morning each Tuesday with a hands-on activity in the garden, followed by a related lesson. The students learn about teamwork, agricultural commodities, nutrition, and how to be good stewards of the land.
The garden was created with significant community help. Eagle Scout candidates built the raised beds, potting tables, benches, and compost bins. Donors generously gave to the Conservancy through its 2015 Big Give S.A. campaign to provide supplies, plants, tools, and deer-proof fence funds. New Earth Composting donated soil, and the park’s Weekend Weed Warrior volunteers spread mulch and filled the beds to ready them for the young gardeners.
The PHP Children’s Vegetable Garden is a cooperative project of San Antonio Parks and Recreation, Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy, Bexar County Master Gardeners, and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.
